MMR To Become USD1.5 Trillion Global Economy By 2047: MMRDA Vision

October 24, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is poised to become one of the world’s leading urban economies by 2047, with its GDP projected to reach USD 1.2–1.5 trillion and its population rising to between 3.6 and 3.8 crore, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Spanning 6,328 sq km across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts, the region’s long-term master plan emphasizes sustainable, inclusive, and high-growth development.

Shankar Deshpande, Chief Town and Country Planning Officer at MMRDA, said the vision places MMR alongside global cities like Tokyo, London, and Singapore. “The per capita income in the region is expected to exceed Rs 33 lakh annually, comparable to Japan and Italy,” he noted. Deshpande added that MMR’s economy aims to reach a GDP of Rs 25 lakh crore within five years, growing at 10% annually, with per capita income touching Rs 8–10 lakh by 2030.

The population is expected to grow from 2.58 crore in 2023 to 2.9 crore by 2030, while employment could rise from 1 crore to 2 crore by 2047, supported by sectors such as IT, AI, finance, and manufacturing. The region’s metro network will expand to 450 km by 2030, and sustainability goals include 90% electrified public transport and 70% renewable energy usage.

Over Rs 4 lakh crore worth of infrastructure projects are underway, including the Navi Mumbai Airport, Versova-Virar Sea Link, and Alibag-Virar Multi-Modal Corridor. With 70% private investment and coordinated execution through an MMR Growth Hub, the vision aims to position the region as a global innovation and investment hub, driving Maharashtra’s growth toward 2047.
