October 30, 2025: The Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) new 32-storey administrative headquarters at Vartak Nagar is set for completion by 2027, marking a major milestone in the city’s civic infrastructure upgrade. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao confirmed that all key approvals, including environmental clearances from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, have been received, paving the way for construction to begin soon.
Rao, after reviewing the project’s progress, said that all preliminary requirements have been cleared. “The current four-storey administrative building is proving inadequate to handle the growing volume of work. The new HQ will offer modern facilities and ample office space, meeting all future requirements and optimising sunlight and ventilation across all office floors. Most trees affected by the construction are being transplanted. The project is scheduled for completion by 2027,” he stated.
The 159-metre-tall structure, more than twice the height of Mumbai’s iconic BMC headquarters, will consolidate all of TMC’s scattered departments under one roof, improving coordination and efficiency. The final building design has been approved, and department allocations are being determined based on current staffing and projected growth. Officials added that floor assignments are being finalised, factoring in fire safety compliance and the provision of refuge areas.
A separate adjoining building is also planned to accommodate the anticipated rise in the number of elected representatives over the next five decades.
Designed by renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, the new headquarters will reflect a fusion of traditional Maratha Empire architecture and modern design principles, symbolising Thane’s evolution as a smart and sustainable city.
