November 03, 2025: The installation of a 56-metre-long steel span at Sonapur junction in Mulund marked a major step forward in the construction of Mumbai Metro Line 4. The launch operation, conducted over the weekend, was carried out in two phases with the use of heavy machinery, including cranes and multi-axle trailers, to ensure precision and safety.
To facilitate the installation, the GMLR junction at Sonapur was completely closed to traffic from 10 pm on Saturday to 10 am on Sunday, and again from 10 pm on Sunday to 7 am on Monday. The temporary closure, though essential for safety, caused inconvenience to motorists and cab drivers as the junction is one of Mulund’s busiest traffic points. Commuters were diverted through alternative routes such as Village Road in Bhandup, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Mulund West, and Subhash Nagar Road.
Traffic police managed the diversions and ensured that emergency vehicles had access through the closed stretch. Officials also deployed personnel to guide motorists and keep the traffic flow smooth across detour routes.
An official stated that if any part of the work remains unfinished, it will continue the following weekend (November 9 and 10) to keep the project on schedule while minimising disruption. “Also, for the steel span connection and other works, any one lane of GMLR (Bhandup Sonapur) junction on LBS Road will be closed as per requirement from November 3 to December 31,” a traffic police official added.
The Sonapur steel span installation is a crucial milestone in the Metro-4 project, which aims to improve east-west connectivity between Wadala and Kasarvadavali. Despite temporary challenges, the development underscores Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to expand its mass transit infrastructure for smoother urban mobility.
