November 11, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon install water meters across Mumbai’s western suburbs—from Goregaon to Dahisar—to improve monitoring, ensure equitable distribution, and curb losses from leakages. The move comes amid persistent complaints of low water pressure in several areas despite sufficient water stock in the city’s seven lakes.
For months, localities such as Magathane (West), Dahisar, Kandivali (West), and Marve in Malad (West) have reported inadequate pressure, particularly near the Western Express Highway. The new zonal meters will help track pressure variations, detect leaks, and identify contamination more efficiently.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who recently reviewed the water shortage situation in North Mumbai, observed that several affected areas receive only 40–45 pressure levels instead of the ideal 60–65. He recommended installing zonal pressure meters to improve real-time monitoring. Goyal stressed that fixing leaks and contamination must be prioritized. He directed civic officials to map all affected zones and implement corrective measures immediately.
Borivali MLA Sanjay Upadhyay said, “While a significant portion of the island city’s population has migrated to the suburbs, the western suburbs still receive inadequate water supply.”
Currently, BMC supplies about 4,000 million litres of water daily to Mumbai and its suburbs. However, around 34%—nearly 1,400 million litres—is lost every day due to theft and leakage.
A senior civic official said the review of affected zones is underway, and corrective action will begin soon. The installation of zonal meters, they added, will help locate pressure drops and losses quickly, improving overall efficiency.
The initiative marks a crucial step toward modernising Mumbai’s water infrastructure and ensuring that residents across the western suburbs receive a consistent and clean water supply.
