Maharashtra’s Pod Taxi Network Set To Transform Daily Commuting Across MMR

November 22, 2025: Maharashtra is gearing up for a major upgrade in urban mobility with its approval of India’s first pod taxi network, a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system designed to ease daily travel across Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar. The plan received the green signal during a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, marking a decisive step toward smarter and more sustainable transport solutions in the state.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is leading the project and has already completed feasibility studies. Authorities are now moving into detailed planning, which includes identifying high-demand corridors, assessing commuter patterns, and mapping the most efficient routes to ensure smooth, time-saving travel.

The upcoming pod taxi system will be built and operated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. While private players will manage construction, technology, and daily operations, MMRDA will serve as the main governing body — a structure expected to ensure faster execution and reduce financial strain on the state.

The fully automated pods will accommodate 3–6 passengers and run on elevated, exclusive tracks to offer uninterrupted, point-to-point travel. With zero emissions, energy-efficient systems, and minimal noise, the network supports Maharashtra’s push towards cleaner, greener mobility.

Inspired by global PRT models used in places like Abu Dhabi, London, South Korea, and Japan, the project is being adapted to suit India’s dense urban environment. It aims to deliver quick last-mile connectivity and shorten travel time for thousands of daily commuters.

Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, and Navi Mumbai — all facing heavy congestion due to rapid development and high vehicle density — are expected to benefit from eased traffic load as more people shift to pod taxis for routine travel.

With feasibility work complete, Maharashtra has invited technical and financial bids, bringing the project closer to construction. Once operational, the pod taxi network is positioned to redefine public transport efficiency and reshape commuting across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
