Heliport And Vertiport Proposed Near Navi Mumbai Airport To Enable Helicopter And Air Taxi Services

December 24, 2025: Travellers using the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport could soon benefit from faster aerial connectivity, as the Adani Group plans to develop a standalone heliport and vertiport near the airport. The facility is intended to support helicopter operations and future air taxi services, offering an alternative to road travel for passengers and business commuters.

According to Adani Group Director (Airports) Jeet Adani, the proposed heliport and vertiport will function independently of airport operations and will not interfere with commercial flights. The group has requested around two hectares of land from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for the project, which is currently under review.

The Mumbai–Pune corridor is already one of India’s busiest helicopter routes, recording approximately 20 to 30 daily movements to helipads at Juhu and the Mahalaxmi racecourse. Until now, these helicopter paths passed over the Navi Mumbai airport area. To address safety and operational concerns, the Airports Authority of India has developed alternate flight paths that bypass the airport. These new routes, along with a standard operating procedure for helicopter services between Mumbai and Pune, are set to come into force from Wednesday.

Industry experts believe a heliport near Navi Mumbai airport would be especially useful for corporate travellers from Pune. Captain Nitin Welde, a helicopter pilot, said passengers flying into or out of Navi Mumbai airport could use helicopters to reach destinations across Maharashtra. He noted that a dedicated access road between the airport and the heliport could significantly cut travel time, ease congestion, and encourage wider adoption of helicopter charter services for business and tourism.

At the same time, India is preparing for the future of urban air mobility. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is working on regulations to integrate electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs), or air taxis, into civilian airspace. While companies such as InterGlobe Enterprises, Archer, ePlane Company and Sarla Aviation are exploring opportunities, eVTOLs globally remain in the testing phase, with limited pilot operations conducted in cities like Dubai and plans underway for their use during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
