Bandra East Skywalk Ready, Awaiting Formal Launch To Ease Commuter Congestion

January 24, 2026: The Bandra East skywalk, built by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is ready for use, promising relief to thousands of daily commuters struggling with congested roads. The Western Railway (WR) has opened access from the 12-metre-wide Churchgate-end foot overbridge (FOB) to the newly constructed skywalk, offering direct connectivity from Bandra station to the east side. While the access is currently barricaded, WR officials confirmed it will be fully operational once BMC formally commissions the skywalk. Most of the construction work is complete, though a few finishing touches remain pending.

The new skywalk stretches across the entire Station Road, spans the highway, and lands at Kala Nagar junction. Unlike its predecessor, which was eventually overtaken by hawkers, BMC faces the challenge of maintaining a clear pathway for commuters. The structure has an average width of six metres, three staircases, and two escalators to facilitate smooth pedestrian movement and ease overcrowding.

The older skywalk, built by MMRDA in 2008, was dismantled in 2021 after being closed in 2019. Initially, BMC planned a 450-metre-long, four-metre-wide skywalk to Bandra Court, but following public demands, it was extended to MHADA, making the total length 680 metres.

Commuters are already expressing optimism. Farzana Shaikh, a college student, said, “The biggest relief once it opens is avoiding traffic at Kala Nagar. It is extremely chaotic with vehicles and pedestrians. We are waiting for the skywalk to open.” Bank employee Suresh Iyer added, “Bandra station is always overcrowded. Direct access from the FOB to the skywalk will ease pressure, especially during peak hours. WR should also link other bridges to this skywalk for seamless movement.” Delivery executive Prakash More noted, “This was long overdue. For daily commuters, small infrastructure changes make a big difference. The skywalk means no waiting in traffic and no hassle.”

The original completion deadline was December 31, 2025. With formal commissioning pending, commuters can soon look forward to safer, faster, and more convenient travel across Bandra East.
