Ageing Infrastructure Pushes Marathi Mandal To Seek Public Support

The Marathi Sahitya Sanskriti and Kala Mandal has initiated a fund-raising campaign to modernise the ageing air-conditioning system at Sahitya Mandir Auditorium in Vashi. The organisation aims to raise ₹15 lakh to replace the existing setup, which has been in use for nearly 17 years and has seen a marked decline in efficiency.

The upgrade forms part of the next phase of the Mandal’s broader modernisation plan for the auditorium, located in Sector 6. Officials noted that the outdated cooling system has led to operational difficulties, affecting both events and the upkeep of the premises. Efforts to secure support from relevant authorities have reportedly not received any response so far.

With temperatures rising, the need for improved cooling has become more urgent. The Mandal highlighted that both audiences and performers face significant discomfort during programmes due to inadequate air-conditioning, particularly in the summer months.

The estimated cost of the project stands at ₹15 lakh, a sum the organisation says is difficult to manage through the auditorium’s routine income. To bridge the gap, the Mandal has turned to public contributions through donations and membership enrolments. Several categories have been introduced, including Life Membership (₹3,006), Patron Membership (₹6,006), and Benefactor Membership (₹11,006), encouraging wider participation from supporters.

The organisation has appealed to literature enthusiasts and well-wishers to come forward and support the initiative. Donations made towards the project are eligible for tax benefits under the Income Tax Act, and corporate contributions are also welcome.

Mandal president Subhash Kulkarni expressed optimism about the effort, stating that with collective participation, Sahitya Mandir can be transformed into a model cultural hub for Navi Mumbai.
