In a major push for public transport infrastructure, the Maharashtra government has approved two new Navi Mumbai Metro corridors with a combined investment of Rs 5,575 crore. The project is expected to enhance connectivity across the city, cut travel times and support future urban growth.
The approved plan includes Metro Corridor-1A, which will connect Belapur to Sagar Sangam, and Metro Corridor-2, linking Pendhar with Terminal-4 of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Together, the corridors will feature 12 elevated stations and will be developed by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL).
Officials said the expansion has been planned to address Navi Mumbai’s growing transportation requirements as the city continues to expand. Government projections indicate that Navi Mumbai’s population could increase from 1.93 million in 2024 to more than 5.21 million by 2061. The proposed corridors have been designed in line with recommendations from the Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) to improve mobility and strengthen integration with the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region transport network.
The state has also approved a fare structure for the new lines based on the existing Navi Mumbai Metro Line-1 model. Current fares range between Rs 10 and Rs 40 depending on travel distance. The framework allows for annual fare revisions of up to five per cent. MMRCL has been authorised to recommend future fare adjustments, subject to government approval and financial viability considerations.
According to officials, the project will improve connectivity for residents of Belapur, Seawoods, Kharghar, Taloja, Kamothe, Kalamboli and neighbouring areas by providing “faster, greener and more integrated urban mobility.”
To support long-term operations and debt servicing, the government has approved the creation of a dedicated Urban Transport Fund. Revenue generated through premium charges on additional Floor Space Index (FSI), transit-oriented commercial development, advertising rights, kiosks, ATMs and branding opportunities will be channelled into the fund.
Implementation of the project will be overseen by a high-powered committee led by the Chief Secretary. Authorities have directed MMRCL and CIDCO to submit a detailed execution roadmap within 15 days.
Once completed, the new corridors will provide seamless connectivity to suburban railway stations at Navade and Khandeshwar, the proposed Metro Line M-24, Navi Mumbai International Airport and the planned high-speed rail station.
