Maharashtra Approves 145 Rail Flyovers To Eliminate Level Crossings In Three Years

The Maharashtra government has approved a plan to construct 145 rail overbridges (ROBs) across the state over the next three years, aiming to eliminate railway level crossings and improve road safety. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision while inaugurating nine railway infrastructure projects developed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MahaRail).

The newly inaugurated projects include four rail overbridges, four underpasses and one rail underbridge (RUB), located in Nagpur, Sangli, Satara, Nashik and Amravati. The government said the larger programme is intended to reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity and minimise accidents at railway crossings.

Highlighting the need for safer transport infrastructure, Fadnavis said nearly 21,000 people lose their lives at railway level crossings across the country every year. He added that Maharashtra will coordinate with the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to complete the proposed projects within the stipulated timeline.

The Chief Minister said MahaRail’s proposal for 145 flyovers has received approval and that the state is prepared to raise loans, if required, to ensure the programme is completed on schedule. He also commended MahaRail and its Managing Director, Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, for completing the nine newly inaugurated projects within a short period while maintaining construction quality.

Meanwhile, Central Railway has urged commuters to board and alight from trains only at designated station platforms. Railway officials warned that some passengers have been attempting to board empty suburban train rakes near the Kalwa Car Shed while they wait for signals before entering stations.

The railway administration said such practices are both illegal and dangerous, as trains may begin moving without notice, increasing the risk of serious injuries or fatalities. Passengers have been advised to use only authorised platforms for boarding and deboarding to ensure their safety.
