The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a Rs 2.94 crore renovation proposal for the 46-year-old Veer Savarkar Municipal Market in Dadar West, aiming to improve structural safety and upgrade facilities for traders and visitors.
The renovation plan follows a structural audit that classified the market building under the ‘C-2’ category, indicating that repairs and strengthening work are required. The proposal has now been placed before the BMC Standing Committee for final approval.
The civic body’s redevelopment plan focuses on restoring the ageing structure and enhancing its overall durability. The proposed works include strengthening the building with new concrete foundations, installing a new Galvalume sheet roof supported by steel and wooden trusses, repairing rainwater drainage systems and upgrading electrical, plumbing and sewage networks.
Additional improvements planned under the project include flooring repairs, brickwork, plastering, painting, installation of new iron gates and protective grills, replacement of doors and windows, steel fabrication work and termite-control treatment. A new overhead water tank will also be installed as part of the renovation.
Located in Dadar West, the Veer Savarkar Municipal Market has been serving local residents for more than four decades and remains an important shopping destination for the neighbourhood.
Civic officials said the renovation project is aimed at strengthening the market’s structure, extending its operational lifespan and creating a safer environment for vendors as well as customers.
The upgrade is expected to provide improved amenities while preserving the market’s role as a key local commercial hub in one of Mumbai’s busiest residential areas.
