Construction of the Kasheli Depot, the key operations and maintenance hub for Mumbai Metro Line 5, has reached 23% physical completion, marking another milestone in the development of the 32-km Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan-Ulhasnagar Metro corridor.
Located near the Kasheli Toll Plaza, the depot is being developed to serve as the technical backbone of Metro Line 5. Once completed, it will be capable of accommodating around 30 metro trainsets and will house inspection bays, workshop lines, a test track, a Depot Control Centre, administrative offices, staff quarters, utility infrastructure and advanced maintenance facilities. The depot will support the corridor’s day-to-day operations, train maintenance and stabling requirements.
To ensure the long-term structural stability of the project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has partnered with IIT Bombay to implement advanced ground improvement techniques. In parallel, temporary inspection, testing and commissioning facilities are being established to facilitate the phased rollout and operational preparedness of Metro Line 5.
The Metro Line 5 corridor is expected to significantly improve public transport connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, providing a faster and more reliable travel option for commuters in the rapidly growing Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Commenting on the progress, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “The Kasheli Depot reflects Maharashtra’s commitment to building modern and reliable public transport infrastructure. Metro Line 5 will strengthen connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar while advancing our vision of a developed, well-connected Maharashtra.”
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde added, “The Kasheli Depot will be central to the safe and efficient operation of Metro Line 5. Its steady progress brings the Mumbai Metropolitan Region closer to faster, reliable, and high-capacity public transport connectivity.”
Once fully operational, the depot will play a crucial role in ensuring safe, efficient, and dependable metro services across the Metro Line 5 network, strengthening sustainable urban mobility in the region.
