Authorities have taken fresh action against a redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Mandvi area after allegations of fraud and forgery resulted in the registration of a criminal case. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has cancelled the No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued for the Madiyar Mansion building, while the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a Stop Work Notice through its Building Proposal Department, directing an immediate halt to construction activities at the site.
As per MHADA’s order, the authority will not grant any further permissions, amendments or approvals of any kind for the project. It has also instructed that all construction work currently underway be stopped with immediate effect to prevent further legal and administrative complications arising from the dispute.
The action comes despite allegations that construction activities continued even after the registration of the FIR and the initiation of legal proceedings. Reports indicate that work had progressed up to the ground plus seven floors at the site, raising concerns regarding adherence to regulatory directions issued by the authorities.
The matter has also reached the office of the Sub Registrar of Assurances. After reviewing eight documents registered following the filing of the FIR, the Sub Registrar informed the concerned police station that these documents should not be considered valid for any official or legal purposes, as they were allegedly prepared using forged documents.
The dispute originated from a complaint filed on February 2 by Mohammad Rafique Usman Pudinawala, who alleged fraud and forgery related to the property. Following the complaint, Paydhuni Police registered an FIR against Mariam Mahboob Kodia, Hussain Kodia and builder Yusuf Ibrahim Supariwala under applicable legal provisions.
With the cancellation of the NOC, MHADA has taken a strict administrative position on the project, which could significantly affect future development plans for the property. The decision may also lead to a detailed review of approvals, ownership records and other project-related documents as investigations into the alleged irregularities continue.
Officials are expected to further examine the case to determine the extent of violations and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
