Mumbai Road Concretisation: BMC Floats Rs 8,614 Crore Tender For 1,437 Roads

Mumbai Road Makeover Gets Rs 8,614 Crore Boost As BMC Plans Phase III Concretisation Of 1,437 Roads

Mumbai’s road infrastructure is set for another major upgrade, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issuing an Rs 8,614-crore tender for the third phase of its road concretisation programme. The initiative will cover 1,437 roads spanning 452 km across the island city and the eastern and western suburbs.

Phase III to Address Incomplete Road Stretches

Under the proposed plan, 1,261 roads covering 313 km will undergo full-width concretisation, extending from one kerb to the other. Additionally, work will be carried out on the remaining side strips of 176 roads, covering 139 km.

The additional component is intended to address stretches that were left out during earlier phases, resulting in partially concretised roads. The latest phase aims to complete these sections and provide a more uniform road surface across the city, a senior civic official said.

Work Expected to Begin in January 2027

The BMC expects the tendering process to be completed by December 2026, with construction scheduled to commence in January 2027.

The larger Rs 17,000-crore concretisation initiative was announced on July 23, 2022, following instructions from then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to complete the city’s road upgrades within two years. However, work under the first two phases, covering 717 km, remains in progress. The civic body has set December 2026 as the target for completing Phase I, while Phase II is expected to be finished by May 2027.

Over 1,333 Km of Roads Already Concretised

Mumbai has an estimated road network of around 2,000 km, of which more than 1,333 km has already been concretised. Completed stretches include Aarey Road, Andheri-Kurla Link Road, Narayan Dabholkar Marg and sections connecting Navy Nagar with Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg.

“The concretisation drive has contributed to reducing the recurrence of potholes. The BMC is maintaining regular surveillance of completed roads, with periodic inspections to detect defects and undertake corrective measures,” an official said.
