The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set up a squad comprising 23 officers to monitor construction activities, including road projects under its jurisdiction as well as Metro sites, and ensure that they follow the pollution mitigation norms issued by the BMC last month. The MMRDA squad will see to it that the barricades of Metro projects meet the mandated 25ft height requirement and that no debris is seen outside these barricades.
Its task also involves ensuring removal of debris from the sites immediately and sprinkling of water at regular intervals when excavation works are undertaken. To ensure that the areas are not rendered unattractive by construction work, these officials will see to it that the median stones are painted in yellow and black strips. Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee has also directed that all areas where projects have been completed or are underway are properly lit.
