Advance Transit Rent Requirement Halts 50% of SRA Projects in Mumbai

Nearly 50% of slum rehabilitation projects in Mumbai have been stalled due to a new mandate from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). According to circular number 210, developers are now required to deposit two years’ worth of advance transit rent with the SRA before any approvals are granted.

This rule, implemented on August 1, 2023, follows a Bombay High Court order from July 19, 2023, which directed the state government to address the issue of unpaid transit rent by builders to slum residents who have vacated their homes for redevelopment projects.
