The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has qualified 14,224 families, which is over 85 percent of the residents in the slums of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar, for a new housing project. This project, in partnership with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), is a major step forward in tackling urban poverty and improving living conditions.
The SRA and MMRDA have formed a joint agreement for this initiative. Under this agreement, the SRA conducted comprehensive surveys to identify eligible tenants, while the MMRDA is responsible for overseeing the redevelopment. This project aligns with the proposed expansion of the Eastern Freeway from Cheddha Nagar in Ghatkopar to Thane, which is expected to greatly enhance the region’s infrastructure.
An SRA official highlighted the extensive survey work carried out over the past five months, during which surveyors visited each household to verify residents’ documents. The final list of eligible beneficiaries was released on Thursday, marking a significant advancement in the redevelopment efforts. Verified families will move to the next stages of the project, while those who have not yet submitted valid documents to the SRA have an additional two months to comply.
