The Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is in its second phase. It will connect Mindspace in Malad and Kandivali’s Charkop Gaon. While Mumbaikars have been using the twin tunnels of the MCRP for the last six months, a new set of tunnels that will travel 40 meters below the surface are being planned.
This phase of the MCRP, which is the most ambitious project of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, would encompass the northern and western suburbs of Mumbai by building a 22.93 km high-speed corridor that connects Versova with Dahisar. A 4-km segment of this project, featuring twin tunnels, will run beneath densely populated areas in north Mumbai, including the Poisar River, Madh Creek, and mangrove patches.
An estimated Rs 16,621 crore would be spent on the project overall, with Rs 5,821 crore set aside especially for the twin tunnels.
Following a meeting with Bhushan Gagrani, the municipal commissioner of Mumbai, Union Minister and Mumbai (North) MP Piyush Goyal spoke with Sudhir Mungantiwar, the forest minister of Maharashtra, earlier this week and urged him to issue the clearances immediately. After that, the proposal for final clearances will be sent to the Union ministry.
Between Versova and Bangur Nagar (Goregaon), package A will travel 4.5 km, while between Bangur Nagar and Mindspace (Malad), package B will travel 1.66 km. The twin tunnels are included in packages C and D. Package F will be the last, linking Gorai and Charkop at a distance of 3.69 km, while Package E will be 3.78 km.
