Top Six landlords own more than ten percent of Mumbai’s land

Mumbai is a city where land is limited and possibly the most costly in the country. So, who are the biggest landowners in the city? According to a survey conducted by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the financial capital is home to some of the largest landowners, who control about 20% of all land parcels.

According to a 2015 assessment conducted by the SRA, which is in charge of supervising slum redevelopment projects in Maharashtra, Mumbai’s real estate market consists of land spanning more than 1 lakh acres, of which around 34,000 acres are habitable.

It is interesting to note that the Parsi community owns various land banks in Mumbai.

Approximately 20% is held by nine private landlords, who include families and trusts. The Godrej family in Mumbai’s Vikhroli region owns approximately half of the 20% livable part.

Along with various private corporations that control huge land banks in Mumbai, several government bodies, including the Mumbai Port Trust, National Textiles Corporation, Maharashtra government, Central government, Central Railway, and Western Railway, own a considerable amount of the city’s land.
