Completion of Gokhale Bridge Phase 2 Targeted for April Despite Issues

The girder for the second phase of the Gokhale Bridge in Andheri is anticipated to be lowered by December 10, ten months after the first phase was made accessible to traffic. However, several crucial tasks are still outstanding, making the bridge’s second phase far from finished. Fixing a misaligned section of the bridge on the side that connects to the CD Barfiwala Flyover is one of the remaining tasks.

By the end of April 2025, civic officials hope the entire bridge will be completed. An official in charge of the project stated, “A significant amount of the girder lowering procedure has been finished thus far, with a tiny portion remaining to allow for the installation of bearings.”

Speaking about the specifics of the lowering, he stated that the girder should be reduced by 8,000 mm, of which 6,900 mm has already been lowered. “Our experience was that the alignment of the portion of Barfiwala Flyover with Gokhale Bridge side, which was made operational, took around three months, and so we think that this time also we should be able to complete the alignment works in three months,” stated the officer.

Along with the structural work, a stairway that connects to the bridge is also being built. When the bridge is completely operational, this feature—which was not included at the first phase’s inauguration—should improve accessibility. Commuters, who have long awaited the construction of this crucial link in Andheri, have criticised the delays. “Work at the site needs to be carried out at war footing if the entire bridge needs to be made operational by the end of April,” stated resident Dhaval Shah.
