Only 46 km of the 324 km of the Phase 1 road concretisation project have been finished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which started the project a year ago. In this phase, 298 roads have not yet been concreted. Phase 1 construction is now underway on 213 roadways.
Phase 2 calls for the concretisation of 1,420 roadways. Currently, 433 of these roads are being built. The remaining roads in this phase are still under construction.
The public has expressed disapproval of the delays. For the past nine to ten months, 14th Road Khar West has been in poor shape, according to a Twitter user. The user pointed out that a portion of the road was completed before the national elections and was never touched again.
Concerns regarding the calibre of the work have also been voiced by the Mumbai North Central District Forum (MNCDF). According to the organisation, two roads were concreted, but the connecting section was never finished. Additionally, building debris was thrown on pathways, leaving them partially exposed.
The same scenario is seen worldwide, according to netizens. According to studies, building a cement concrete road typically takes 30 to 45 days. Excavation, project completion, and traffic reinstatement are all included in this.
The model code of conduct for state assembly elections and delayed traffic police approvals also contributed to Phase 2 delays. After the monsoon, the BMC completed the concreting of 187 of the 698 planned roads, indicating some progress in Phase 1. By May 31, 2025, the remaining roads in this phase should be finished.
In phase two, 377 km of roads will be concreted. This covers 65 km in South Mumbai and 68.25 km from Phase 1. Of the 1,420 roads slated for Phase 2, 989 have not yet begun construction.
