MPCB Issues Notice To BMC, Contractors Cover Loose Soil At Coastal Road

The contractors hired by the civic body on Friday took corrective action, including covering the piles of loose soil with green plastic sheets, a day after the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) sent BMC a show-cause notice, asking why the construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road should not be halted immediately and legal action not taken for non-compliance with pollution control measures.

“Whoever the government agency may be, they have to follow all measures for tackling any pollution coming out of the site, hence the notice was issued,” MPCB chairman Sidhesh Kadam stated on Friday. The notification must be responded to by Monday by the BMC chief engineer and the four civic-appointed contractors, according to V M Motghare, joint director-technical, MPCB, Mumbai. “Their replies would be assessed and checked if measures taken were satisfactory,” he stated.

A. N. Roy, a former director general of police and Worli resident, claimed that the MPCB’s notice and the locals’ complaints about the dust coming from the coastal road’s Worli sites had an effect since plastic sheets had covered loose dirt. — Richa Pinto.
