Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 Set For A Sustainable Makeover, Completion By 2028

In order to reinvent passenger experience, sustainability, and capacity, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is starting an ambitious refurbishment of Terminal 1 (T1) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The expansion, which is expected to be finished by 2028–2029, will increase the terminal’s capacity by 42% and accommodate 20 million people a year, making it an essential component of Mumbai’s expanding aviation industry.

Over two million square feet will be redeveloped, and it will be done in stages to minimise interference with day-to-day activities. The current T1 facility will be demolished in November 2025 as part of the project, and passenger traffic will be absorbed by CSMIA’s Terminal 2 and the future Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is anticipated to open in 2025.

The T1 renovation is centred on a dedication to sustainability. With its biophilic elements and environmentally inspired sustainable architecture, the new terminal will serve as a shining example of environmentally responsible airport design. The terminal’s open areas, natural light, and lush interior vegetation are all part of its design to bring the outside inside and inspire and excite travellers.

The terminal seeks to establish a new international standard for environmentally friendly, sustainable airport design with its wave-inspired architecture that mimics the flowing rhythm of the ocean. With the construction of a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) connecting Mumbai’s aviation, train, and road networks, the redesigned T1 will prioritise seamless connectivity. The MMTH will create a future-proof transportation gateway by facilitating easy connections to a variety of transportation options, such as direct metro access and underground bus terminals.

The infrastructure of the terminal will also be significantly upgraded. The passenger terminal building (PTB) will undergo a complete renovation to accommodate both local operations and prospective international services. The terminal will establish new operational benchmarks with upgraded amenities like district cooling, sophisticated electrical substations, and an expanded baggage handling system.

The goal of the T1 reconstruction, according to Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, is to future-proof Mumbai’s standing as a major international aviation centre, not only increase capacity. “Providing the outstanding service that our passengers have become accustomed to is still our top priority, and we are working to make T1 a sustainable and cutting-edge terminal for the future,” Adani stated. In addition to satisfying the expanding needs of India’s thriving aviation industry, the completion of this renovation will guarantee that Mumbai’s airport stays at the forefront of environmentally friendly architecture and passenger ease.
