In an effort to reduce traffic in Thane, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has revealed plans for an 8.24-kilometer elevated route along the Eastern Express Highway. With three lanes in each way, the six-lane road will give cars an alternate path out of the city.
Spanning from Anand Nagar in Mumbai to the Kharegaon Toll Naka, the project comes with an estimated budget of ₹21.88 billion. It is slated for completion within 48 months, which includes a 24-month defect liability period, according to an MMRDA official.
Although the majority of the project doesn’t require specific clearance, a tree survey is now being carried out to evaluate the environmental impact. Though the procedure is already under progress, a 120-meter section across the Kalwa Bridge still needs the required clearances.
Once operational, the elevated road is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in Thane by diverting through-traffic, reducing travel time, and enhancing road safety. Authorities are committed to balancing urban development with environmental considerations.
