The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun removing the mastic coating on the recently launched section of the Rs 14,000-crore Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) in response to public outcry. There was a lot of outrage as commuters posted footage showing what they described as a “patchwork-like” finish.
In response, the civic body clarified that the additional mastic layer visible on the Haji Ali stretch is not a construction flaw but part of an ongoing process. “This work is progressing swiftly, and once the coating is removed, fresh bitumen resurfacing will be completed within a day or two,” an official stated.
Disappointed citisens took to social media to voice their frustration, with one user calling the work “beyond disappointing” and demanding accountability from BMC and L&T. “Mumbai’s Rs 14,000 crore Coastal Road already looks like patchwork. I feel betrayed—this was supposed to be world-class infrastructure,” the user wrote.
The recently opened section, which links Marine Drive with Haji Ali Juice Centre, gives cars immediate access to the southbound carriageway of the high-speed connector. Previously, the Worli or Amarsons interchanges were the only ways for southbound traffic to access the coastal road.
Important multi-level interchanges at Haji Ali, Peddar Road (Amarsons Garden), and Worli Sea Face have been designed as part of the ambitious project. The Amarsons and Worli interchanges contain four and five vehicle arms, respectively, whilst the Haji Ali interchange has eight.
