The Maharashtra government has prohibited the start of any new projects and directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to finish all current road concretisation projects in Mumbai by May 31. Speaker Rahul Narvekar called a meeting with Mumbai MLAs to discuss concerns about suspected mismanagement and irregularities in the ongoing work, and this direction was made during that meeting.
A review of progress is scheduled for the end of April, with Additional Municipal Commissioners assigned to coordinate with utility agencies. Assistant Commissioners have been directed to draft a structured schedule for the remaining work. Discussions also explored the feasibility of using asphalt instead of concrete for smaller roads.
Concerns over rising costs and advance payments to contractors were raised, prompting instructions to provide relevant financial documents for review.
MLAs from every party attacked the Urban Development Department last week for problems with the concretisation of roads. Demands for an investigation of purported anomalies in Mumbai’s road developments were also made during these talks.
