Regarding the Dharavi redevelopment project, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reassured locals that ineligible tenants will be given rental housing for a period of 12 years, following which ownership will be passed to them.
Addressing concerns raised by the Opposition in the Assembly on Tuesday, Fadnavis emphasized the state government’s commitment to ensuring housing for all. “Those who do not qualify for housing will be provided rental homes for 12 years. After this period, ownership will be transferred as per norms and procedures,” he said.
The redevelopment of Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, has raised concerns about its impact on residents. However, Fadnavis clarified that all slum dwellers residing in the area before 2001 will receive free housing. Those who settled between 2001 and 2011 will be given houses at construction cost, while residents who moved in post-2011 will be accommodated in rental homes for 12 years before gaining ownership.
Over 100 million square feet make up the Dharavi reconstruction project, which is expected to cost more than Rs 2 lakh crore. It is anticipated that this effort will result in the development of about 1.25 lakh tenements, comprising both residential and commercial units.
