Delays Stall Goregaon Flyovers As BMC Struggles With Land & Utility Hurdles

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is facing major delays in completing key flyover projects in Goregaon, largely due to complications with relocating underground utilities and unresolved land acquisition hurdles.

Among the most impacted is the extension of the Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover, meant to ease traffic between Goregaon East, West, and Oshiwara Link Road. Initially expected to be completed in 2022, the project remains incomplete, with commuters expressing doubt over the revised deadline of November due to persistent congestion at key junctions like the Ram Mandir and Relief Road signals.

To speed up progress, BMC has directed contractors working on the Dindoshi-Goregaon-Dadasaheb Phalke Film City flyover—part of the larger Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project—to ramp up manpower and work in three shifts. This six-lane flyover is crucial for connecting Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs. A central component of the GMLR is a pair of underground tunnels running beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, with tunneling expected to begin soon after the boring machine arrives in August.

Another long-pending plan, a 500-metre cable-stayed bridge over the Oshiwara Creek, remains stalled due to over 2,500 slum dwellers occupying the designated site. The BMC awaits clearance from the Bombay High Court to relocate these families before construction can begin.

The mounting delays have attracted criticism from state leadership, with Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis reprimanding BMC for sluggish progress and urging quicker completion. Meanwhile, residents continue to wait for long-promised improvements to their daily commute.
