The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to build four new foot overbridges (FOBs) to improve last-mile connectivity to the Mumbai Metro Green Line-4 and 4A (Wadala–Thane corridor). By immediately connecting suburban train stations to the growing metro system, these FOBs will greatly improve daily commuters’ access to several modes of transportation.
According to Mid-Day, tenders have been issued for the construction of FOBs at Pant Nagar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, and Vijay Garden (Thane). An estimated budget of Rs 1.29 billion has been allocated for the project, with an additional Rs 80 million set aside for utility relocation works. The proposed bridges will seamlessly integrate with existing pedestrian infrastructure such as skywalks at Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, and Bhandup, ensuring convenient and safe movement between transport modes.
This initiative is seen as a vital move towards improving commuter experience, particularly in high-density transit corridors, by offering uninterrupted connectivity between suburban rail and metro systems.
On the environmental front, MMRDA is also managing the ecological impact of metro construction. In February 2025, the authority proposed the clearance of 9,900 additional trees within the project area. Of these, 7,016 are planned for relocation, while 2,884 trees will be felled. Overall, across both phases of the metro development, 3,716 trees will be cut, 7,590 relocated, and 1,094 will remain untouched.
To compensate for the environmental loss, MMRDA has committed to planting approximately 25,000 new trees under a comprehensive afforestation programme. This reflects the authority’s focus on balancing modern infrastructure needs with sustainable urban development.
These strategic initiatives underscore MMRDA’s commitment to transforming Mumbai’s public transport while preserving its ecological integrity.
