Water Taxis Set To Revolutionise Access To Navi Mumbai Airport By April 2025

The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), scheduled to commence operations by April 2025, is set to become India’s most commuter-friendly and multimodal transport hub. In a landmark move towards sustainable urban mobility, the airport will feature water taxis as a faster and eco-friendly mode of access, complementing its seamless connectivity via road, rail, and metro.

As traffic congestion continues to pose significant challenges across Mumbai, the introduction of water taxis is expected to transform airport commutes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). These water taxis will be constructed using Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP), a material known for being lightweight, durable, cost-effective, and easy to maintain. Designed with speed and efficiency in mind, the FRP taxis promise not only to reduce travel times but also to curb environmental impact.

The Chief Minister has underlined the importance of completing all airport-linked connectivity projects on time to ensure a hassle-free experience for commuters. In addition to modern transit options, the NMIA will also prioritise accessible infrastructure and robust parking solutions to accommodate the anticipated passenger flow.

CIDCO, the planning authority behind the development, has been tasked with ensuring the highest standards of housing and urban infrastructure around the airport. This includes delivering affordable housing schemes, setting strict project timelines, and maintaining top-tier construction quality in adjacent regions. The coordinated effort between transport innovation and urban development is seen as a model for future metro cities.

With Mumbai’s road networks often overwhelmed, this waterway integration could be a game-changer, offering a viable, quicker alternative for travellers and daily commuters alike. If successful, this initiative could pave the way for similar transport models in other major Indian cities, marking a shift in how urban India approaches airport connectivity.

As the infrastructure landscape of Navi Mumbai evolves, the countdown to the launch of India’s most integrated airport experience has well and truly begun.
