The Maharashtra government is planning to launch a water taxi network throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in order to alleviate the city’s ongoing traffic jams. The project is expected to be completed in the next two years. With assistance from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, this project, which was inspired by the Kochi Water Metro, will initially involve the construction of 15 new jetties. In order to create the foundation for this revolutionary transport option, a group from the Kochi Water Metro Project recently travelled to Mumbai to exchange knowledge and perspectives.
The Fisheries Development Ministry has confirmed that nine water taxi routes have been identified so far, with construction to commence shortly. In total, 21 potential sites across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar have been mapped for future jetties. This project is expected to significantly cut commute times. For instance, the current two-hour road journey from South Mumbai to Vasai could be completed in just 40 to 50 minutes by water taxi. Similarly, the Kalyan-Vasai route, which now takes over 90 minutes by road, could be shortened to around 35 to 45 minutes via water.
Among the proposed water taxi routes are Narangi to Namak Vadeshwari, Vasai to Mira Bhayander and Gaymukh, and Kalyan to Mumbra and Kalher. Other planned routes connect Mulund, Airoli, Vashi, DTC, and the Gateway of India, along with longer stretches such as Mira Bhayander to Borivali, Mandwa, and Nariman Point. In a later phase, the government also plans to introduce Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry services and water ambulances, further strengthening the region’s maritime transport infrastructure.
This ambitious water-based transport project reflects the state’s commitment to eco-friendly and efficient urban mobility, promising not only to decongest roads but also to redefine the commuting experience for millions across the Mumbai region.
