The groundbreaking Uttan-Virar Sea Link (UVSL) project’s Phase 1 construction has been expedited by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). With a strong emphasis on boosting quality of life, increasing mobility, and unlocking regional economic potential, the project is set to benefit the northern Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in many ways.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee is leading the project, which is being carried out under the direction of Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
After a careful study of the technical and financial elements at the 159th Authority Meeting, which was chaired by Shinde, the revised Phase-1 proposal was approved for Rs 87,427.17 crore.
“This project represents a significant advancement in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development. It demonstrates our dedication to improving connectivity for everybody, promoting economic expansion, and guaranteeing Mumbai’s environmental sustainability. “Our region will have a better, more connected future thanks to the Uttan-Virar Sea Link,” Fadnavis said.
The initiative, according to Shinde, is a “shining example of the government’s commitment to balanced regional development”.
“We are bringing together important districts like Thane, Palghar, Mumbai, and Mumbai Suburban like never before with this game-changing link. In addition to making travel easier, this project will increase business opportunities, improve emergency access, and unite the entire region, therefore, realising the goal of “One MMR, One Growth Story,” the Deputy CM stated.
At the 153rd Authority Meeting in October 2022, the project, which had been originally conceived as the Versova-Virar Sea Link (VVSL) under the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), was transferred to MMRDA.
While Phase 2 (Virar to Palghar) is presently undergoing feasibility studies, Phase 1 (Uttan to Virar) has been approved for immediate implementation. Due to overlaps with the North Coastal Road Project of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Versova to Uttan section has been removed from the existing scope.
