The redevelopment of Panvel railway station has entered a significant new phase, marked by the relocation of the Harbour Line ticket counter to a newly constructed facility at the station’s main entrance. Led by Central Railway, this transformation aims to establish Panvel as a key transit and logistics hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The existing two-storey structure that housed the old ticket counters is now scheduled for demolition, paving the way for critical infrastructure improvements. These include extending the Harbour Line to Karjat and developing a dedicated freight corridor. In its place, a ground-plus-two building has been built to enhance commuter services. The Harbour Line counter is operational on the ground floor, while the upper levels will soon accommodate a long-distance ticketing office and a permanent Railway Police Force station.
The relocation is intended to streamline passenger movement and prepare for increased footfall. Accessibility upgrades such as escalators are being installed to link suburban and long-distance platforms, benefiting senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities. These will be functional once the connecting overbridge is completed.
More than just a structural overhaul, the redevelopment reflects a shift towards commuter-friendly, inclusive infrastructure. New features like mobile charging stations and upgraded waiting areas are part of this vision. Officials also indicated future additions may include solar panels and water recycling units.
With its proximity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and strategic rail connections, Panvel’s upgrade is expected to boost regional growth and set a model for modern, sustainable railway development nationwide.
