June 9, 2025: The Adani Group has outlined an ambitious plan comprising over 310 projects, with a total capital expenditure of approximately Rs 17,500 crore, aimed at significantly enhancing the capacity of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) by March 2029. The upgrades intend to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity (CPA) to 6.5 crore passengers, reinforcing Mumbai’s position as a major aviation hub.
Key components of the expansion include the construction of a larger Terminal 1 to replace the existing facility, along with an increase in Terminal 2’s capacity from 4 crore CPA to 4.5 crore CPA. Additionally, the airport aims to elevate its hourly flight handling capacity to over 52 flights, accommodating the rising demand from both domestic and international travellers.
According to a recent order issued by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), the combined capacity of CSMIA and the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to reach 11.5 crore CPA by 2029-30. This expansion is essential to meet the growing passenger demand in Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Among the infrastructural developments is the proposed extension of Taxiway M, which will connect the existing taxiway to the start of runway 27. This project includes the construction of a bridge over the Mithi River, creating an additional aircraft holding area designed to accommodate Code F aircraft, such as the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380.
CSMIA recently recorded its highest passenger traffic ever, handling nearly 5.5 crore passengers in calendar year 2024. These expansion efforts will help ensure that Mumbai’s primary airport continues to efficiently manage increasing air traffic and maintain its critical role in India’s aviation network.
