June 10, 2025: The Principal Chief Safety Officer (PCSO) of Central Railway, C.K. Prasad, has been appointed to investigate the tragic train incident that occurred on Monday morning at Mumbra station in Thane district, Maharashtra. The incident claimed the lives of four passengers and left nine others injured.
According to Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila, the case is being treated as an “incident” rather than a formal “accident”. Preliminary findings suggest that passengers were travelling on the footboard when the mishap occurred around 9:10 am. PCSO Prasad visited the site and conducted an initial inspection to begin identifying the root cause.
A team of railway officials later arrived at the scene to measure the distance between the two fast lines (Up and Down) at Mumbra. The incident occurred when the Karjat-11 local from CSMT was crossing the Kasara-10 local at Mumbra station. Eight passengers were reportedly found injured in the gap between two parallel tracks, while five others sustained minor injuries onboard the CSTM-bound train.
Emergency medical teams responded promptly, and the injured were taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa and Civil Hospital in Thane.
In response, the Indian Railways has announced a major safety upgrade. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw convened an emergency meeting with officials and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to fast-track the design of non-AC local trains with automatic doors and improved ventilation. The first rake is expected to be ready by November 2025 and launched into service by January 2026 following testing and certification.
The initiative aims to prevent similar tragedies by addressing long-standing safety concerns in Mumbai’s overburdened suburban train system.
