June 11, 2025: The main construction of the new Carnac Bridge, situated near Masjid railway station and linking to P. D’Mello Road in South Mumbai, was successfully completed on 10 June 2025, as per schedule, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed on Tuesday.
Final touches, including road markings, painting, installation of street lighting, and signage, are currently under way and expected to be completed by 14 June. The bridge is now fully prepared for vehicular movement, pending final approvals.
On Tuesday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), Abhijit Bangar, visited the site to review the progress, accompanied by Chief Engineer (Bridges) Uttam Shrote and Deputy Chief Engineer Rajesh Mule. The Carnac Bridge is a critical east-west corridor, easing traffic for areas such as CST, Masjid, and Mohammed Ali Road.
The original 125-year-old structure was deemed unsafe by Central Railway in August 2022 and subsequently dismantled. The BMC took over the reconstruction, adhering to designs approved by the railway authorities.
Key features of the new bridge include a total length of 328 metres, with 70 metres spanning the railway tracks. The approach roads—130 metres on the east and 100 metres on the west—bring the BMC-managed section to 230 metres. Two massive steel girders, each weighing 550 metric tonnes, rest on reinforced concrete piers and were installed over the tracks under special railway blocks.
The eastern section was constructed in just four months, beginning in February 2025. Structural stability has been certified by consultancy firm RITES Ltd. All major civil works, including noise barriers and anti-crash protections, are complete.
A load test is scheduled for 13 June, with results due by 15 June. Following expert review, the bridge will be opened to traffic. Staircases and a slip road will be completed post-monsoon
