SCLR Extension Set To Open In July After Years Of Delay

June 28, 2025: The long-awaited final phase of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension is slated to open in July, featuring a nearly completed 90-degree cable-stayed bridge over the Western Express Highway (WEH). The development is expected to significantly streamline east-west connectivity, eliminating the need for diversions via Vakola and Hans Bhugra Marg.

Undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the project links the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and WEH, improving traffic flow between Kurla and the vicinity of Panbai School in Santacruz, near the airport. While the civil works on the cable-stayed section are complete, final touches—including street lighting, signage, and removal of temporary scaffolding—are under way. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee has confirmed the segment is on track for a July inauguration.

Once operational, the extension will offer direct relief to commuters from Kurla, Chembur, Chunabhatti, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), reducing travel time, easing congestion at key junctions, and providing an uninterrupted route between Mumbai’s major arterial roads.

Initially announced in 2016, the flyover extension has experienced repeated delays due to design alterations, land acquisition hurdles, the COVID-19 pandemic, and administrative holdups. The project’s cost has escalated from ₹450 crore to ₹650 crore.

The bridge’s engineering is particularly noteworthy, with a 215-metre cable-stayed span incorporating a 70-degree curve on an Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) rising 25 metres above ground. Featuring a striking Y-shaped pylon, the structure marks a first of its kind in Asia.

With approximately 95% of the work completed, the SCLR extension is poised to become a vital connector, enhancing mobility between Mumbai’s eastern and western corridors and easing pressure on congested suburban routes.
