November 10, 2025: Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Line 2B, connecting D.N. Nagar to Mandale, is nearing completion and is expected to begin operations later this year. The 23.6-kilometre elevated corridor, featuring 20 stations, is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 10,986 crore. Officials said the first phase, covering the Mandale–Chembur stretch, will be commissioned by the end of 2025.
Part of Mumbai’s larger metro expansion plan, Line 2B is designed to strengthen east–west connectivity and enable seamless travel across the city’s suburbs. The line will integrate with other major corridors, including Metro Lines 2A, 3, 4, and 7, as well as the Monorail and both the Western and Eastern Express Highways. Once operational, it is expected to reduce road congestion and enhance accessibility for millions of daily commuters.
An official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said, “The line will help decongest major routes and provide last-mile connectivity to residential, commercial, and industrial zones across both sides of the city.”
Urban transport experts see Line 2B as a critical step toward sustainable mobility in one of the world’s most densely populated cities. They note that the metro network expansion can significantly reduce carbon emissions by encouraging commuters to shift from private vehicles to public transport. “Expanding the metro network not only shortens travel time but also shifts commuters from private vehicles to public transport, which has direct climate benefits,” a transport planner said.
The new line will also integrate with the Mumbai One app, enabling commuters to plan, pay, and switch seamlessly between different transport modes through a unified digital ticketing system.
With over 300 kilometres of metro routes under construction or planning, Mumbai’s expanding network is set to redefine urban travel—making it faster, cleaner, and more sustainable.
