State Plans Major Heritage Tourism Hub At Ahilyabai Holkar’s Birthplace

The Maharashtra government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform Chondi village, the birthplace of Ahilyabai Holkar, into a prominent heritage and tourism destination. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the initiative on Monday, highlighting a strong focus on infrastructure development, conservation, and cultural promotion.

Rs 681-crore project to transform memorial site
During a high-level review meeting, Fadnavis confirmed that Rs 681 crore has been allocated for the comprehensive development of the memorial site at Chondi. The project aims to celebrate the life and legacy of Ahilyabai Holkar while positioning the location as a modern tourist attraction. Key features planned include a grand statue, landscaped gardens, riverfront development, a state-of-the-art museum, an open-air theatre, and a dedicated tourist facilitation centre.

Focus on tourism infrastructure and visitor experience
The chief minister stressed the importance of creating high-quality infrastructure to draw visitors throughout the year. He directed officials to ensure thoughtful planning that balances green zones with open public spaces, while enhancing the site’s overall aesthetic appeal. The project is envisioned not just as a memorial, but also as an educational space to inspire future generations about Ahilyabai Holkar’s contributions.

Water management and sustainability key priorities
Fadnavis underscored the need for sustainable water solutions, emphasising year-round availability. He instructed authorities to consider building a barrage as a more effective alternative to traditional check dams. Environmental sustainability, he noted, must remain central to the development strategy.

PPP model under consideration for long-term upkeep
The government is exploring a public-private partnership (PPP) model for select components to improve efficiency, ensure maintenance, and support long-term sustainability. Land acquisition will be funded through the District Planning Committee.

Road connectivity and surveys already underway
As part of the larger plan, two road projects worth Rs 360 crore have already been awarded by the Public Works Department. A joint survey involving forest, irrigation, and local authorities has been completed to finalise boundaries.

Project aims to boost the local economy
Ram Shinde said the initiative will combine history, culture, and tourism while creating employment opportunities for local communities.
