Chembur Station On Mumbai Metro Line 2B Likely To Open Soon After CMRS Inspection

Mumbai Metro Line 2B is set to take a major step toward improving east-west connectivity in the city’s eastern suburbs, with the Chembur Metro station expected to undergo inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) next week. Once the statutory clearance is granted, the station is likely to become operational in the coming weeks.

Officials believe the opening of the Chembur station will significantly improve commuter movement and boost ridership on the Metro 2B corridor due to its strategic integration with multiple transport systems.

Currently, Phase I of Metro Line 2B operates on a 5.4-km stretch between Diamond Garden and Mandale. The section includes five stations — Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd and Mandale — and had received CMRS approval before passenger operations commenced.

However, despite the corridor becoming operational, commuter numbers during the initial months have remained lower than anticipated. Authorities are now hopeful that the addition of the Chembur station will substantially increase passenger traffic because of its role as a major interchange point.

The station is expected to connect Metro Line 2B with Mumbai’s suburban railway network as well as the Mumbai Monorail system, creating seamless multi-modal connectivity for commuters travelling across the eastern suburbs and central parts of the city.

Officials said the integration is expected to make daily travel more efficient while improving accessibility in the Chembur–Mankhurd region. Urban transport planners also believe that coordinated operations between the Metro, Monorail and suburban rail systems could help strengthen Mumbai’s larger public transportation ecosystem.

In parallel, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is preparing to restart Monorail services during the upcoming monsoon season after carrying out extensive operational and infrastructure upgrades.

Transport experts have highlighted that improved interchange connectivity and stronger first- and last-mile access will play a crucial role in increasing Metro 2B ridership. The integration is also expected to reduce dependence on road transport and ease congestion on key roads in eastern Mumbai.

Once operational, Chembur station is expected to emerge as one of the busiest stations on the corridor due to its connectivity advantages and proximity to major residential and commercial zones.
