The Mandale Metro Depot, a key operational hub for Mumbai Metro Line 2B, has received the prestigious EPC World Award for “Outstanding Contribution in Urban Infrastructure Projects,” marking a significant achievement for Mumbai’s rapidly expanding metro network.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Mandale facility has emerged as one of Asia’s largest and most technologically advanced metro depots, highlighting the city’s continued focus on building sustainable and future-ready urban transport infrastructure.
Developed across 30.45 hectares, the depot has been planned with emphasis on advanced engineering, efficient operations and environmentally conscious infrastructure. One of its standout features is the presence of 72 stabling lines, including an innovative double-decker stabling arrangement that maximises space utilisation and operational capacity.
The facility also includes India’s longest metro test track, 10 maintenance lines and a dedicated inspection bay designed to support uninterrupted metro services and large-scale train maintenance operations.
Officials stated that the depot is equipped with a sophisticated 24×7 Depot Control Centre, along with automatic and heavy-duty wash plants, integrated water recycling mechanisms and sustainable utility systems aimed at improving long-term operational efficiency.
The infrastructure project additionally incorporates nearly 100 kilometres of underground utility networks and advanced systems for controlling dust and noise pollution to minimise environmental impact in surrounding areas.
According to MMRDA, the execution of the depot involved several engineering and logistical complexities, including difficult coastal soil conditions, limited site accessibility and significant space constraints. Despite these challenges, the project was completed as a benchmark example of resilient and smart urban infrastructure development.
The Mandale Depot serves as a critical support facility for Metro Line 2B and plays an important role in strengthening Mumbai’s broader metro ecosystem. Authorities said the recognition reflects MMRDA’s ongoing efforts to create world-class public transport systems capable of transforming the daily commute experience for millions of residents.
The award also underlines Mumbai’s increasing investment in sustainable mobility and modern transit infrastructure to meet the demands of a rapidly growing urban population.
