Residents of Lokhandwala Township and nearby areas are set to get much-needed traffic relief as a key stretch of the long-pending Magathane-to-Goregaon 120-feet Development Plan (DP) road is expected to open in June. The project, which is being closely monitored under the Chief Minister’s War Room initiative, will improve access to the Western Express Highway (WEH) and reduce congestion on Akurli Road.
The 500-metre stretch connecting Lokhandwala and Thakur Village via Singh Estate is expected to benefit over 20,000 residents, while also improving connectivity for Damu Nagar, Kranti Nagar and Hanuman Nagar.
According to BMC officials, the 5.5-km DP road runs parallel to the WEH and has faced significant delays due to encroachments along the alignment. Two major encroached patches have already been cleared, while permissions are being sought to remove the remaining structures.
Road construction has now reached its final stage, following the demolition of around 300 structures in Singh Estate and the rehabilitation of all project-affected persons. The project gained momentum following a PIL filed by the Lokhandwala Residents Association in 2024, leading to implementation orders from the civic administration. Once operational, the road is expected to improve east-west connectivity in the area significantly.
