BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar Urges BMC To Fast-Track Nariman Point Fire Station Redevelopment

BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has called on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to expedite the redevelopment of the Nariman Point fire station, citing the deteriorating condition of the existing structure and the urgent need to modernise the facility.

In a letter addressed to Maharashtra Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, the corporator highlighted that the matter had already been discussed during a meeting held on January 7.

“In the meeting, redevelopment of the fire station on the 3,500-square-metre plot was discussed and the BMC was asked to make a redevelopment plan, but unfortunately there was no development in the issue since then,” said Narwekar.

According to him, the current G+1 fire station building is in a dilapidated state and requires urgent attention. He stressed that the facility plays a critical role in emergency response, particularly given the growing population in the area and the presence of key government establishments nearby, including Mantralaya and the Vidhan Bhavan.

Narwekar noted that the entire 3,500-square-metre plot is under the possession of the BMC and is reserved exclusively for Fire Brigade purposes. He further pointed out that the site falls within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) as per the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) 2019, making timely planning and approvals essential for redevelopment.

“The entire plot is in the possession of BMC. The land is reserved for Fire Brigade purposes. The premises fall under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) as per CZMP 2019. Considering the strategic importance of this fire station and the urgent need to upgrade its facilities, prompt action is necessary,” Narwekar said.

The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Mumbai’s emergency response infrastructure and modernise civic facilities in key administrative and commercial districts of the city.
