Mumbai Metro Line 6 Nears Completion, But Land Disputes Stall Key Sections

Mumbai’s much-anticipated Metro Line 6, also known as the Pink Line, has reached nearly 88% physical completion, yet unresolved land and legal hurdles continue to delay its full commissioning. The 15.3-km fully elevated corridor, which will connect Jogeshwari to Vikhroli and significantly improve east–west mobility, is now facing bottlenecks at three critical locations, slowing progress despite an overall advanced construction stage.

Although authorities are still aiming for commercial operations by mid-2027, project execution has been hampered by land acquisition issues at the proposed Shyam Nagar station, the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR)–Eastern Express Highway junction, and the planned Kanjurmarg depot site.

At Shyam Nagar, structural components such as tracks and platforms are largely complete, but construction of the station building has stalled pending final state government approvals. Meanwhile, the JVLR–Eastern Express Highway stretch remains a major obstacle, where eight supporting pillars are yet to be built due to long-standing legal disputes over the land parcel. Officials have reportedly secured temporary possession and approached the court seeking permission to proceed with construction while litigation continues.

The third challenge is at Kanjurmarg, where full land handover for the metro depot is still pending. To avoid operational delays, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is evaluating interim solutions that would allow maintenance activities to be conducted along active tracks if needed.

Authorities have also initiated compulsory acquisition proceedings at Shyam Nagar after landowners allegedly did not respond to compensation offers, while encroachment removal and rehabilitation efforts are underway in affected zones.

Once operational, Metro Line 6 is expected to cut travel time between Andheri and Vikhroli by nearly 45 minutes and provide seamless interchanges with Metro Line 2A at Adarsh Nagar, Line 7 at JVLR, and Line 3 near SEEPZ. It will also integrate Western and Central Railway networks, strengthening Mumbai’s east–west connectivity.

Beyond transport benefits, the corridor is already influencing real estate trends along JVLR, with rising demand in areas such as Kanjurmarg, Powai, Vikhroli, and Jogeshwari West. However, the project’s timely completion will depend heavily on how quickly pending legal disputes and approvals are resolved.
