The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Standing Committee expressed strong displeasure after officials from the Bridge Department remained absent during the discussion on the additional cost proposal for the reconstruction of the Reay Road railway bridge.
Several bridge and flyover projects are currently underway across Mumbai. As part of one such project, the railway bridge at Reay Road was demolished and reconstruction work was initiated. However, the cost of the contract has increased, leading to the submission of a revised proposal before the Standing Committee for approval.
A proposal regarding modifications to the demolition and reconstruction work of the railway overbridge (ROB) on the Reay Road railway line, being executed by the Maharashtra Railway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MRIDC) and the Railways under a joint venture, was presented before the Standing Committee on July 8, 2026.
The original proposal for the bridge work was approved at a cost of Rs 196.07 crore. However, due to additional requirements, the project cost has now increased by Rs 23.75 crore, taking the total contract value to Rs 219.83 crore.
During the earlier meeting, Ubatha Sena corporator Ramakant Rahate had raised several concerns regarding the revised proposal. When the matter was brought before the committee again on Thursday for approval, Rahate questioned the authorities responsible for the bridge project.
Rahate said that despite the increase in the project cost, details regarding facilities such as footpaths and other amenities should be provided. He also pointed out issues related to water leakage at the site and sought complete information from the administration.
However, as officials from the Bridge Department were not present to address the queries raised by committee members, Leader of the House Ganesh Khankar moved a sub-indication to keep the proposal pending in the office.
The move was intended to send a message to administrative officials over their absence during important discussions. Following this, Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde announced that the proposal would be filed in the office until further consideration.
