BMC Clears 30 Structures At Borivali Connector For Coastal Road North Project

The BMC’s demolition drive at Borivali Connector

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demolished 30 structures on the western side of the Borivali Connector to remove obstacles to the Mumbai Coastal Road (North) project. The demolition, carried out by the civic body’s R North Ward on Friday, October 9, marks another step towards preparing the site for the next phase of construction.

The clearance drive is part of Package F, which involves building a 3.47-km elevated corridor connecting the Gorai and Dahisar interchanges. The stretch is expected to strengthen coastal connectivity and help ease traffic congestion across Mumbai’s northern suburbs.

Civic officials supervised the operation, which involved two Poclain excavators, two JCB machines and three dumpers. Five engineers and 20 civic personnel were deployed for the drive. Police personnel from the Maharashtra Housing Board Colony Police Station were also present to maintain security and ensure the operation proceeded smoothly.

Coastal Road Project Split Into Seven Packages

The Versova-Dahisar-Bhayander Coastal Road initiative, connected with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road network, has been divided into seven packages to facilitate execution. The 20-km Versova-Dahisar-Bhayander road project has an estimated cost of Rs 16,621 crore and is intended to improve traffic movement across the region.

Another major component is a 5.6-km elevated road linking Dahisar and Bhayandar. Planned at a width of 45 metres, the stretch is estimated to cost Rs 3,304 crore and is designed to provide an additional route for vehicles travelling between the two areas.

The Dahisar-Bhayandar link was scheduled to begin construction in August 2025, with completion targeted for December 2028. According to the project details, the road aims to bring travel times down from approximately 90–120 minutes to 15–20 minutes. Fuel savings are also projected to reduce carbon emissions by 55%.

The removal of the 30 structures at Borivali Connector clears part of the alignment required for Package F. As work progresses, the broader coastal road network is expected to improve movement through Mumbai’s western suburbs and provide alternatives to congested existing routes.

The project forms part of the city’s wider infrastructure expansion programme, with its eventual impact depending on construction progress and the integration of connected road links.
