Garib Nagar Clearance Completed As Western Railway Demolishes 94 Structures In Bandra

Mumbai: Western Railway Demolishes 94 Structures At Bandra's Garib Nagar After PAP Rehabilitation

Western Railway carried out the demolition of 94 remaining structures in Garib Nagar, Bandra (East), on Friday, October 30, after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) completed the rehabilitation of all eligible Project Affected Persons (PAPs).

The structures had been left untouched during an earlier demolition drive in May 2026 to allow eligible families to receive alternative accommodation. MMRDA has now allotted permanent homes to all 94 eligible PAPs and handed over possession to them, clearing the way for the latest demolition exercise.

The action follows an October 23, 2026, order issued by the Bombay High Court in Writ Petition (Lodging) No. 8840 of 2026. While disposing of the matter, the court instructed eligible residents to vacate the premises within seven days. Railway authorities were subsequently directed to complete the demolition within 48 hours.

The removal of the structures is expected to unlock space for major railway infrastructure upgrades in the Bandra area. The proposed developments aim to increase passenger-handling capacity, improve train operations and provide better facilities for commuters.

One of the key projects is an integrated railway complex planned on the eastern side of Bandra Terminus. The proposal includes an additional railway platform, designated as Platform 8, along with expanded train stabling capacity and upgraded maintenance infrastructure.

The broader development plan also covers the relocation and construction of supporting maintenance facilities, improved passenger movement areas, larger holding spaces and other essential amenities.

Western Railway said the initiatives form part of a comprehensive effort to develop Bandra into an integrated railway hub. The planned upgrades are expected to strengthen operational efficiency, accommodate growing passenger demand and improve the overall travel experience.

With the rehabilitation process completed and the remaining structures cleared, the railway administration can now move ahead with the proposed infrastructure expansion.
