Mumbai’s 1913 Elphinstone Bridge Gets A New Double-Decker Structure, Work Reaches 80%

Reconstruction of Mumbai’s Elphinstone Bridge has reached approximately 80% completion, with the first major girder installation expected by the end of November, followed by another in December. The work is being carried out as part of the Sewri-Worli Connector project, which aims to improve connectivity across the city.

The 4.5-km elevated connector will link the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu) with the Coastal Road, creating a more direct connection between Mumbai’s eastern and western transport networks. The reconstructed Elphinstone Bridge will also re-establish road connectivity across the railway tracks near Prabhadevi and Parel.

The project has encountered delays because of the technical complexities involved in positioning large girders above heavily used railway lines. Construction of the elevated double-decker structure has also added to the engineering challenges.

The installation work requires carefully planned railway blocks to ensure the safety of commuters as well as construction personnel. Coordination with railway authorities is therefore essential for completing the girder-launching operations.

Once the railway section is finished, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will undertake the remaining work on the approach roads and connect the unfinished sections of the project.

The overall completion deadline has now been revised to May 31, 2027.

After becoming operational, the Sewri-Worli Connector is expected to provide motorists with a faster and more convenient route between the eastern and western parts of Mumbai. It will also strengthen connections between major road infrastructure projects, including Atal Setu and the Coastal Road.

The redevelopment of Elphinstone Bridge is an important component of this wider connectivity plan, as restoring the road crossing will improve access between key neighbourhoods such as Prabhadevi and Parel while supporting the city’s expanding transport network.
