Ghatkopar Steel Span Installed As Mumbai Metro Line 4 Hits 84.5% Completion

August 11, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a key milestone in the construction of Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavli) with the successful installation of a massive steel span at Pantnagar–Ghatkopar Bus Station in Ghatkopar East.

The 58-metre-long, 3.1-metre-high span, weighing 450 tonnes and built from five steel girders, was installed in just two nights despite heavy monsoon rains, high traffic volumes on the Andheri–Ghatkopar Link Road, and restricted space caused by the adjacent Somaiyya Nallah.

The complex task required the deployment of heavy-duty equipment, including cranes with capacities of 700 and 500 metric tonnes, supported by 500-tonne and 80-tonne backup cranes. A workforce of more than 100 engineers, labourers, and safety staff worked in coordination with over 50 trained traffic wardens to maintain smooth traffic flow.

Additional machinery such as six trailers, three hydras, three Eicher trucks, three man-lifters, and a standby ambulance ensured uninterrupted and safe progress throughout the operation. With this achievement, Metro Line 4 has now reached 84.5% completion. Once operational, the corridor will significantly improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), offering faster, more reliable, and sustainable travel for thousands of daily commuters.

The MMRDA extended its appreciation to government departments and partner agencies for their coordinated efforts, which ensured minimal disruption to both road traffic and local residents during the work. This latest milestone underscores the rapid progress of Mumbai’s metro expansion and brings the city closer to delivering an integrated, efficient, and eco-friendly public transport network.
