November 03, 2025: Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) has received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the design, manufacture, supply, installation, and commissioning of metro systems for the Mumbai Metro Line 5 project. The contract, worth Rs 2,481 crore, encompasses both Phase 1 (Kapur Bawdi–Kasheli Dhamankar Naka) and Phase 2 (Dhamankar Naka–Bhiwandi–Kalyan APMC) of the corridor.
The scope of work includes the supply of rolling stock, communication-based signalling and train control systems, telecommunication, platform screen doors, depot machinery, and plant systems. It also includes five years of comprehensive maintenance following a two-year defect liability period. As per the contract schedule, Phase 1 is expected to commence revenue operations within 108 weeks, while Phase 2 is targeted for completion in 200 weeks, with GOA-4 commissioning within 217 weeks. The total maintenance period will continue for seven years post-commissioning.

The driverless metro trainsets for Line 5 will be manufactured under the Make-in-India initiative at TRSL’s Uttarpara facility in Kolkata. The stainless-steel car bodies will enhance durability, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort. The same facility also produces rolling stock for metro projects in Ahmedabad, Surat, Bengaluru, and Sleeper Vande Bharat trains for Indian Railways.
